I decided to leave the AMV because I wanted to study harp with Mrs Berghout. I thought she was such an extraordinary person that I felt: either I study with her, or I don’t study music at all. I took the risk, and fortunately I was accepted.
Another memory is much more uncomfortable. At primary school, a boy in my class, Peter Bunen, was kicked down the stairs by the headteacher after he had wet himself because he hadn’t been allowed to go to the toilet. We stood there and watched. I didn’t intervene and didn’t dare to say anything. No one else did either.
Why is it that at one moment you do what feels right to you, even when you don’t know how it will turn out, while at another moment you remain silent even though you know that something is wrong?
